For many children, summer can mean lost learning. At the Boys & Girls Clubs of Palm Beach County, students in the Reading Horizons program are doing just the opposite, strengthening literacy skills, improving grades and building confidence.

The impact is perhaps best captured by 10-year-old Deonnie.

“My grades have improved. It’s really helped me a lot,” she said.

Deonnie says Reading Horizons has changed how she thinks about her future.

“Sometimes I think making it in life is hard. You have to study, you have to focus on jobs, you have to focus on your education. It’s really hard. But Reading Horizons has helped me with that a lot.”

Another student, a 12-year-old from Northboro Elementary School, said the program helped raise grades to all A’s. Through lessons focused on phonics, vocabulary and reading comprehension, students are developing skills that will serve them well when they return to school this fall.

Designed for students in kindergarten through fifth grade, Reading Horizons helps combat summer learning loss while improving literacy and test scores. The program combines instructor-led lessons with interactive computer activities, allowing students to practice new skills in a fun, engaging environment. Educators say one of the greatest benefits is not just stronger reading ability, but greater confidence.

This summer, GL Homes supported the effort with a $10,000 donation to the Boys & Girls Clubs of Palm Beach County, helping ensure local children continue learning during the break.

Boys & Girls Club of Palm Beach County’s mission is to enable all young people, especially those in need to reach their full potential as productive, caring, responsible citizens.
